Sanitary measures to be taken as a makeup artist in the times of Covid

As a makeup artist since we are dealing with many actors and models, it is our responsibility to take sanitary precautions when it comes to using our cosmetics and tools. Good hygiene and minimum contamination are ways to protect you and your clients from infection.

Here are some few measures that can be followed when taking sanitary precautions as a makeup artist:

  1. A disinfected spatula, wiped clean with a tissue or cotton pad that had been dampened with astringent, should be used to remove the contents from all containers.
  2. Prior to touching a models skin, wipe the palms of hands with astringent or sanitiser, be careful not to over do it because the alcohol content of the product can be drying to the skin.
  3. Be sure that your hands are washed with soap every time you visit the washroom or after you have eaten a meal.
  4. Keep brushes and supplies out of your pocket or mouth. Don’t touch your face or skin when you are working on someone else.
  5. Tools must be sterilised with 99% alcohol (eyelash curler, tweezers, scissors, spatula, etc.)
  6. The tables need to be set up appropriately for the job. Always have Q-tips, tissue and cotton pads, protective masks and eye wear
  7. Makeup boxes should be cleaned regularly brushes need to be perfectly clean in order to avoid breakouts and eye infections. Clean the brushes with a brush cleaner and/or mild shampoo.
  8. When applying foundation type products, always use a clean sponge on each model. After makeup application is complete throw your sponge away.
  9. Use a mascara fan, spooly, or disposable wands when applying mascara to avoid cross contamination.
  10. When using lipsticks, swivel the bullet up, scrape the colour from the side of the bullet with your spatula and then put the colour on your palette.
